Playa PAraiso

Local Shops

Upper supermarketThe nearest large supermarket is Upper which is on the old Cabo de Palos Road.

Upper is popular with local Spanish people and tourists. It has a good range of items (food and non food) at reasonable prices. There is a small in store bakery, fresh meat and fish counters and serve yourself vegetables and fruit in abundance.
Also a good selection of wines, beers and spirits.
Upper will deliver for free if you spend over 50 euros.
Upper is open every day including Sunday (limited hours).
Sometimes they have amazing special offers.

Another supermarket, Mercadona, is situated on the old Cabo de Palos Road, 200 metres on the left before the crossroads with the Gran Via de La Manga .
It is opposite the Restaurante Festivo (Chinese Restaurant). Good selection of foods but fruit and vegetables generally come pre packaged and selection of wine etc. not as good as at Upper. The fish counter is amazing though and, particularly on a Friday, it is full of locals buying large amounts of all different types of fresh fish. They also have a large selection of frozen fish - the raw prawns (gambas) are particularly good if you have the patience to peel them
You can shop on line - On-line Shopping Mercadona-Cabo de Palos. Prices are the same as in the shop but they charge extra for packing and delivery. Not open on Sunday.

Hondamar SupermarketThe local shop for Playa Paraiso is Hondamar which is located in Playa Honda.
A family run concern, all the staff speak limited English and are always friendly and helpful and the shop itself is extremely clean and well stocked.
Given its small size there is an amazing selection of goods including fresh bread and meat (which is of a high quality). Prices are slightly higher than the larger supermarkets. The sliced to order Serrano Ham is particularly good.

Also in Playa Honda there is a chemist (farmacia) where the staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable no matter how unusual your ailment. A surprising range of drugs are available over the counter and are generally very cheap.

There is also a fishmonger and a shop selling fruit and vegetables. These have limited opening hours so please check times locally

In Los Belones you can find several smaller shops including a bakers (panadeira), newsagents (prensa), butchers (carniceria), hardware shop (ferreteria - see below), fishmonger (pescaderia) wine shop (bodega), optician (optica) and a chemist (farmacia).

FerreteriaA quick word about hardware stores (ferreteria) in Spain.
They are a paradise for anyone interested in DIY and are reminiscent of old fashioned ironmonger shops. Every time I go in one I am reminded of Ronnie Barker and the 'four candles' sketch.
The shop in Los Belones has very friendly, helpful staff who speak limited English but usually manage to find whatever you want no matter how obscure.
They have hundreds of different types of Jubilee clips - very important apparently!

A bread van serves all the local villages and is generally around Playa Paraiso at about 11.00 - 11.30 am.
The van (white of course) is driven around very slowly and the driver sounds his horn so that you can hear him coming. If you need any bread or pastries just go outside and wave him down.
